50th statehood day of Sikkim celebrated

LEH, May 16 : Under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the 50th statehood day of Sikkim was celebrated with full fervor, here today.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Sikkim on this day, recognising the profound history and significance of Sikkim’s integration with India.
Sikkim, formerly a sovereign kingdom, officially became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, following a democratic referendum where the Sikkimese people voted in favour of merger with India.
The celebration was organised to foster unity by appreciating India’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
On this occasion, the recorded message of Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, was played, where he emphasised Sikkim’s vibrant traditions, diverse languages and its recognition as India’s first fully organic state.
Distinguished speakers at the event highlighted the deep historical and geographical similarities between Sikkim and Ladakh, appreciating their shared landscapes, traditions and resilience.
