JAMMU, Apr 24: A five-year-old boy died while his mother and infant sister sustained serious burn injuries after a temporary hutment they were residing in caught fire at Kanachak Camp area here today.
The fire possibly broke out due to a short circuit around 2:30 pm in the shanty of one Mohammad Sharif, a nomadic resident of Gool, Ramban, who was currently residing at Kanachak Camp, a police official said.
As soon as the fire was reported, teams from Kanachak Police Station along with fire tenders rushed to the spot, he said.
After hectic efforts, the flames were brought under control and the injured were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Jammu, the police official further said.
Sadly, he said, five-year-old Mohammad Saqib, son of Mohammad Sharif, died in the fire, adding that his mother Nazia (45) and six-month-old sister Rozia sustained severe injuries and are undergoing treatment at GMC Jammu.
In addition to the human tragedy, the family also lost two cows and a buffalo in the blaze, the police official said.
The fire also damaged some cash and other household items worth lakhs, he said.
According to him, police have started further investigation into the matter.
