Srinagar, Apr 26:At least 40 percent outstation students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, who had left for their homes early this month following clashes on the campus, have returned back to the institute and joined their regular classes along with local counterparts.
A top official of the NIT Srinagar told Excelsior that ‘normalcy’ has been restored on the campus and the situation is peaceful. “We resumed our classes on Monday and the atmosphere here is very good,” the official said, adding that the outstation students have also started to return to the campus for attending regular classes.
Revealing details, the senior official said that there are 1800 outstation students enrolled at the NIT. “After tensions and clashes, 1200 students left for their houses and 600 stayed back here. As of now 482 students out of 1200 have returned and joined classes,” the official said, adding that out of 482, 90 are girls.
The official said that the tension on the campus has completely defused and local and outstation students are in good terms with each other. “They are studying, eating, playing and residing together and there isn’t any animosity among them,” he said.
The senior NIT official said all security forces who were deployed on the campus have been removed and only police are deployed near the gate of the institute. He said there is no threat to any outstation student and they need not to worry. The official said police have also established a 24/7 helpline (09595770590, 0194-2414441) at Nigeen Police Station for the students in order to redress any exigency or grievances of the students.
