UDHAMPUR, June 30: In two separate cases, Police arrested four drug peddlers besides recovering 9.6 kg poppy straw and 9.40 grams heroin from their possession.
Police team from Police Station Rehambal, led by SHO, Purab Singh, stopped a vehicle bearing registration number JK14H-6411 for checking purposes at naka point Flata. During the checking of said vehicle, 9.60 kgs of poppy straw like substance was recovered from the possession of the driver namely Sanjay Kumar son of Krishan Lal of Kah Phalata and his associate namely Rohit Kumar son of Krishan Lal of Kah, Phalata who were arrested on the spot.
In another success, Police team from Police Post Tikri, intercepted a bike bearing registration number JK14H-2854 , which was coming from Jammu towards Udhampur.
Upon conducting a thorough frisking of rider and pillion, the police team recovered 9.40 grams of heroin from their possession following which both the accused were arrested.
The arrested persons have been identified as Jeevan Kumar son of Bishan Dass of Jaganoo Morh, Udhampur and Sunil Kumar son of Ashok Kumar of Jaganoo, Udhampur.
Meanwhile, according to a spokesman of the Udhampur Police, they have so far registered 61 cases under NDPS since January this year in the district and arrested 87 accused, including seven under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act.
The spokesman said 22 vehicles used for the transportation of narcotics were seized while six pharmacy shops were also attached for violating drug norms.
As part of financial disruption, spokesman said 43 bank accounts linked to drug peddlers were frozen, involving an amount of Rs 16,72,948. The seized contraband including heroin, charas, poppy straw and ganja during this period was valued at Rs 2.42 crore in the black market, the spokesman said, adding police also attached properties worth Rs 4.69 crore, including multiple vehicles, residential houses and commercial assets related to both NDPS and bovine smuggling cases.
Police have also successfully secured convictions against 28 drug peddlers in 21 cases from courts, which marks the professional approach towards case investigation and prosecution, the spokesman said.
