JAMMU, Oct 20: In a tragic accident, four persons were killed and 12 others sustained injuries when an overloaded and over speeding Tavera vehicle plunged into 300 feet deep gorge near Domail Chenani on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway this morning.
The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK01N-5474 was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu when it met with accident near Domail Chenani due to the negligence of the driver. The driver lost control of the vehicle while overtaking a truck as a result of which Tavera plunged into 300 feet deep gorge causing grievous injuries to all its occupants.
On getting information about the accident, a police party from Chenani Police Station swung into action and started rescue operation with the help of locals. After hectic efforts, all the injured occupants of the vehicle were brought out of the gorge and rushed to local hospital where four of them were pronounced as brought dead.
All the 12 injured including the driver were, later, shifted to District Hospital, Udhampur and their condition was stated to be out of danger when reports last came in.
The tragic accident has once again proved as hollow the tall claims of the authorities concerned about checking over-loading in the passenger vehicles plying on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway as Tavera was carrying 16 passengers against the seating capacity of 11 passengers.
Whether the Traffic Police personnel deployed on the National Highway failed to notice Tavera carrying five passengers beyond its seating capacity or intentionally ignored the vehicle is a million dollar question. Whatsoever may be the reason but the fact is that driver managed to ply vehicle with passengers beyond the seating capacity and overloading came to notice only when Tavera met with accident.
The deceased in the tragic accident have been identified as Aslam (24), son of Zamil Ahmed, Nizam-ud-Din (30), son of Fakur-ud-Din, Salman (6), son of Nafiz and Papu (22), all the residents of Uttar Pradesh.
