SRINAGAR, May 5: Police today arrested four accused in the sexual assault and murder of a woman in Nishat area of Srinagar.
A police spokesman said that Srinagar Police acted promptly upon receiving information regarding an attempted sexual assault on a woman by a group of persons near Water Works Road, Nishat.
The victim had sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
“Following the incident, FIR No. 35/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Nishat, and investigation was immediately initiated,” the spokesman added.
The spokesman said that during the course of investigation, four accused were arrested and they have been identified as Suhail Bashir Bhat, son of Bashir Ahmad of Asham Sumbal; Adil Ali Bhat, son of Ali Mohammad of Zeethyar Nishat, Firdous Ahmad Rather, son of Ghulam Ahmad of Zeethyar Nishat, and Suhail Afzal Bhat, son of Mohammad Afzal of Pahloo Brein.
He said that in a swift and decisive operation, all the accused have been apprehended. “Further investigation in the case is going,” he said.
“Srinagar Police remains steadfast isn’t commitment to uphold the rule of law, eliminate crime from society, and ensure the safety and dignity of every citizen,” he added
Police today handed over the body of the victim to her relatives and it was taken to Ganderbal for last rites. Hundreds of people participated in her last rites.
The relatives of the woman demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of the heinous criminal act.
