SAMBA, Apr 14: Three hand pumps of Panchayat Mananu block Nud in district Samba are defunct for last one month, but the concerned department is in deep slumber, due to which the people are facing lot of trouble during the lockdown period announced in view of spread of dreaded COVID 19.
Inhabitants of the area said that on the one hand there is lockdown and they do not have to come out of their homes and on the other hand, people are facing problems due to lack of basic amenities like water. Three hand pumps in Panchayat Mananu of Block Nud of district Samba are not function for about one month. With the help of these three hand pumps, dozens of villagers used to drink water but today the condition is that in this lockdown that people have to go far away to fetch the water, the villagers added.
They said that there are Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in this area and they do not even have the means to store water as they have to get water from far off places. In such a situation, these people take away the pots on their heads to fetch the water.
They alleged that although the Government is making people aware on keeping physical distance but when these people go far away to fetch water, they have to go jointly as going to fetch water to a far off place alone is risky also.
The villagers said that there are also no proper means of water supply in the area. Even pipes have been installed but there is no regular supply, they added.
A resident of village Palth, Yashpal told this reporter that two hand pumps in his village Palath are defunct for one month and one pump is also malfunctioning in village Mananu. On one hand there is epidemic like Corona Virus and on the other hand people are carving drops of water.
Sarpanch Panchayat Mananu, Sunil Chowdhary said that, the three hand pumps have been defunct in his Panchayat for one month now. He said that in this regard he also informed to concerned authorities by requesting them that the hand pumps be repaired so that people do not have to face drinking water shortage during the time of lockdown.
He said that, although he has been pleading for many days, but till now the hand pumps have not been repaired.
