JAMMU, Jan 17: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu, organized a three-day workshop on “Writing Skills” for the students of Semester I of the Five-Year Integrated Post-Graduate Programme in Mathematical Sciences from 15th to 17th January 2026.
The workshop was conducted as a part of the course “Communication Skills” included in the students’ curriculum. The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen students’ academic and professional writing abilities through focused lectures and practical training.
Prof Sadaf Shah from the Department of English conducted and coordinated the workshop. She highlighted the relevance of writing skills for students of all disciplines, including the Mathematical Sciences.
The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Romesh Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu, as the chief guest. He emphasized the vital role of writing skills in achieving academic excellence, communicating research effectively, and succeeding in professional life.
Dr Disha Sharma from Centre for Women Studie’s, JU, delivered an insightful lecture on Category Grouping, explaining how ideas can be organized logically to improve clarity and coherence in writing.
Dr Pooja Kumari from GDC Khor, spoke on Avoiding Ambiguity and Using Proper Signposting Techniques. Her session focused on helping students make their writing clear, precise, and reader-friendly by avoiding vague expressions and using appropriate connectors and transitions.
Dr. Simran Kour from the Department of English conducted a detailed session on Proposal Writing for Higher Studies. Dr Sana Lone from the Dept of English, JU, delivered a lecture where students learned about accuracy, conciseness, and formal writing required for official and professional documentation. Dr Neena Vij from the Central University of Jammu delivered lecture on Well-Knit Logical Sequence and Narrative Sequence. The session helped students understand how ideas should flow smoothly and logically in both academic and non-academic writing, enabling them to develop well-structured and coherent texts.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory session, during which students shared their feedback and reflections. The participants appreciated the practical orientation of the sessions and found the workshop extremely helpful in improving their writing skills.
