3-day JK Agricultural Science Congress begins at SKUAST-J

JAMMU, Oct 28: 4th Jammu & Kashmir Agricultural Science Congress began today at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu, Chatha Campus.
The mega-3-day event, being organized in collaboration with J&K State Council for Science & Technology and Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India, New Delhi, is being attended by more than 400 delegates from all over the country.
Dr A K Singh, Vice Chancellor, Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior and former DDG-ICAR, who was chief guest in the inaugural function, said that main focus of the JK Science Congress shall be the technological innovations, opportunities and challenges for livelihood security. He hoped that recommendations derived out from the deliberations on various issues will go a long way in meeting the targets of food grain production without depletion of natural resources in a sustainable manner.
Dr Pradeep Kumar Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu, stressed on the need to adopt farming systems approach for meeting the livelihood security of small and marginal farmers of both hills and plains. He also hoped that brainstorming information during this event will enlighten the delegates which will help them in shaping their future research road map keeping challenges for sustainable rainfed agriculture in their mind. “The recommendations coming out of the show will provide a way for improving the overall agricultural scenario of J&K State and effective technologies will be developed for the conservation and management of natural resources besides ensuring livelihood security to poor farmers through adoption of other enterprises such as aquaculture, poultry, sheep rearing, livestock rearing etc,” he said.
The inaugural programme started with the lighting of ceremonial lamp by the chief guest in the presence of Dr Pardeep Kumar Sharma, Dr T S Ganai, Director Education, SKUAST-J, Dr Kernail Singh Risam, Director Extension, SKUAST-J and others.
Dr JP Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu and convener of the Congress, made a power point presentation focusing on present scenario regarding education, research and extension of the varsity.
Dr V K Razdan, Organising Secretary, 4th Jammu & Kashmir Agricultural Science congress, extended formal vote of thanks.
During the technical session the eminent speakers from India spoke on various topics of immense importance and stressed on socio-economic dynamics of farming / rural livelihood, management of water / land resources, alternate farming system / farm diversification, technological innovations on crop / livestock management, climate resilience in agriculture, managing biotic / abiotic stresses, challenges / strategies in animal health and productivity besides sustainable agricultural production for livelihood security of farmers.
