2899 persons killed in over 18000 mishaps

Srinagar, June 14: Government today said the 2899 persons have been killed in over 18000 road mishaps across Jammu and Kashmir in three years from 2013 to 2015.
In a written reply to a question of Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dr Shehnaz Ganai, Minister Incharge Transport, said 6469 accidents occurred in year 2013, 5861 in 2014 and 5836 in 2015. The Minister said in all these accidents, 2899 deaths occurred while 24866 persons sustained injuries.
The Government in a separate answer to a question of MLC Firdous Tak said there has been progressive increase in the number of vehicles (both commercial/private). According to the figures of the Transport Department, a total of 355102 new vehicles were registered since year 2013.
In Jammu region, 64598 vehicles were registered in year 2013-14, 67809 in 2014-15 and 79549 in 2015-16 while as in Kashmir region, 47693 vehicles were registered in year 2013-14, 43385 in 2014-15 and 52068 in 2015-16.
The Government informed that 1126 number of police personnel are posted in the Traffic Wing J&K against the sanctioned strength of 1481. It said that number of police personnel posted/ deployed for traffic duties in Jammu Zone are 1118 while 1016 are posted/ deployed in Kashmir Zone for the same.
