JAMMU, Mar 16: Two people died and 27 others sustained injuries after a rashly driven bus they were travelling in collided head-on with an SUV and later rammed into a tree in Akhnoor town here today.

Officials said the accident occurred around 5:30 PM when the ill-fated bus (JK02AC-5466) hit a Scorpio vehicle (JK02DL-8417) on the Pallanwala-Akhnoor road at Kot Garhi Village, resulting in injuries to 29 people, including the driver of the bus.
They were immediately taken to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Akhnoor by the locals and police, where two of them, identified as Vijay Kumar (40) of West Bengal at present Jourian, whose parentage wasn’t known immediately, and Rajni Devi (30) wife of Joginder Lal of Pahariwala, Akhnoor, succumbed to their injuries.
Meanwhile, after the preliminary treatment, 21 of the injured passengers were shifted to Government Medical College Jammu for advanced treatment, while the remaining six are undergoing treatment at Sub-District Hospital Akhnoor.
Police have registered a case FIR number 60/2026 under sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Police Station Akhnoor and started further investigation into the matter.
MLA Akhnoor Mohan Lal and SDPO Virendra Gupta earlier visited the injured at SDH Akhnoor and assured them of all possible assistance.
