UDHAMPUR, Feb 5: Police, District Child Protection Unit, Child Help Line and the District Task Force today rescued a 14-year-old girl who was forced into child marriage in Udhampur district.
The rescue operation was carried out at MH Road in Udhampur district following a tip-off received at the child helpline. The wedding procession had come from Hiranagar in Kathua.
Despite prior advisories issued by Udhampur Administration and Police, the marriage was being solemnized.
Acting on a recommendation by the Child Welfare Committee, the girl has been declared a “child in need of care and protection”. The girl has been shifted to a child care home for her safety and well-being, the officials said.
The action was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Udhampur – Saloni Rai, team led by District Social Welfare Officer Udhampur Kanika Gupta, Naib Tehsildar Udhampur Anayat Ali along with police team and revenue officials.
