Srinagar, Jan 28: At least twelve people were injured today after the rooftop of a double-storied residential house collapsed during a condolence gathering at Chandergir village in the Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Officials said the incident occurred when a large number of mourners had assembled at the house to offer condolences following the demise of the house owner, Ghulam Mohammad Dar, son of Ghulam Qadir Dar.
Dar, a former employee of the Fire and Emergency Services department, had passed away a day earlier after a brief illness.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the heavy rush of people inside the house led to excessive load on the structure, triggering the sudden collapse of the rooftop.
“The house was old and could not bear the load and led to the collapse,” an eye witness said.
Panic gripped the area as several people were trapped under the debris before locals and rescue teams rushed to the spot and carried out relief operations.
All the injured were immediately shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Hajin for treatment.
Of them, four were later referred to SKIMS, Bemina for advanced medical care. Hospital authorities said the condition of all the injured is stable.
Meanwhile, MLA Sonawari Hilal Akbar Lone visited CHC Hajin to inquire about the health of the injured and directed hospital authorities and concerned officials to ensure all necessary medical assistance to the victims.
