JAMMU, Nov 4: An 11-year-old girl from Jammu, who was left with a crushed and deformed leg after a wall collapsed during a Mata Ki Chowki and Jagrata, has made a remarkable recovery—thanks to a complex limb reconstruction surgery performed at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Katra.
The child was among several injured when a portion of a wall came crashing down during the religious gathering. Buried under the debris, she suffered severe head injuries along with extensive damage to her leg. While emergency treatment saved her from life-threatening cranial trauma, her lower limb remained critically affected—shortened, infected, and badly deformed.
For months, the family ran from one medical centre to another, but the case was repeatedly refused. The injury was complicated, infection had set in deep, and risks of surgical failure were high. With no clear hope, the parents feared their daughter may never walk again.
The turning point came at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, where Senior Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Manish Kumar Varshney, known for his expertise in deformity correction and limb reconstruction, agreed to operate. Dr Varshney and his team planned a detailed procedure using the Ilizarov technique, a specialized method used worldwide for complex orthopedic cases involving bone loss, infection and limb lengthening.
The surgery was performed under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, ensuring the family did not bear the treatment expenditure. Today, months after the surgery, the girl is able to walk on her own. Her leg is fully healed, her bone has united, and her confidence has returned.
Hospital Facility Director Dr M M Mathawan said such recoveries highlight the hospital’s commitment to advanced care infused with compassion.
Executive Director Dr Yashpal Sharma said that the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s vision of providing world-class healthcare continues to benefit patients across the region.
