10 years rigorous imprisonment awarded in rape case

JAMMU, Feb 3: The Court of the Additional Sessions Judge in Poonch Susheel Singh has sentenced a local man, Mohd Waseem, to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for the commission of rape.
The case (FIR No. 285/2022) originated from Police Station Mendhar after allegations surfaced that the accused had committed sexual assault. According to the prosecution, the incident took place in May 2022 during a time when the prosecutrix’s family members were absent due to the passing of her paternal aunt.
Following a full trial, Waseem, a resident of Mankote, was convicted on January 30, 2026.
During the sentence hearing, the court weighed arguments from both the Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) and the defense counsel. Waseem was sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 was imposed on him. In case of his failure to pay this amount, he will undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.
The court directed that the period of imprisonment already undergone by the convict during the trial would be set-off against the final sentence. In a move focused on the survivor’s rehabilitation, the court ordered that the entirety of the Rs 50,000 fine, once realized from the convict, be paid directly to the victim’s mother.
Furthermore, the court noted that the victim has already been recommended for additional compensation under the State Victim Compensation Scheme.
