JAMMU, Feb 29: In a first conviction in Jammu and Kashmir under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Principal Sessions Judge Rajouri Jaffer Hussain Beigh today awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to Hardev Singh, son of Ram Lal of Kotranka, who is a teacher by profession.
In the judgment, the court observed, “the accused is teacher and trustee of the students in the school. As far as the profession of the accused and his relation with the students in the school is concerned, the law expects high degree of character, honesty and confidence and hence higher sentence require to be prescribed”.
Accordingly, court awarded rigorous imprisonment for ten years and imposed fine of Rs.10,000. In default of payment of fine, he shall further undergo imprisonment of like nature for 6 months for the commission of offence under Section 10 of POCSO Act.
