1.17 lakh arms licenses issued in J&K

JAMMU, Mar 22: Over 1.17 lakh arms licenses have been issued in Jammu and Kashmir during the last five years.
This was disclosed by Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in reply to the question of Congress MLA, Vikar Rasool in the Legislative Assembly.
These licenses were issued by the District Magistrates to the civilians and security forces personnel for self protection as per the provisions of the Arms Act, 1959 and Arms Rules, 1962.
The maximum licenses have been issued in Kulgam (22515), Udhampur (17772), Srinagar (16931), Shopian (15265), Doda (15227) and Rajouri (13873).
About streamlining the issuances of gun licenses, the Chief Minister said that the Home Department has issued guidelines of Ministry of Home Affairs to all the District Magistrates for compliance. Moreover, the Home Department has also issued circular instructions to all the District Magistrates impressing upon them to issue licenses strictly in accordance with the provisions of Arms Act/Rules.
“The web-based issuance of arms licenses has been developed, which is being implemented in the State”, he said, adding “the requests for extension of area validity of licenses are being processed online”.
Responding to another question, he said that the process of data entry of arms licenses issued/renewed is in the final stages.
