Law School JU retains rolling trophy

JAMMU, Mar 17: The Law School, University of Jammu organised the Inter-University Justice Bodh Raj Memorial debating contest under the aegis of Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial Trust, wherein the neighbouring Northern Universities of India participated. The topic for the contest was “Judicial activism plays a constructive role in strengthening of democracy”.
The prestigious rolling trophy was retained by The Law School, University of Jammu. The first position was bagged by Swikriti Mahajan of the Law School, Jammu University while second and third positions were bagged by Tushar Kalsotra of the Law School, Jammu University and Pawan from Department of Law, Punjab University, Chandigarh respectively.
Prof Satnam Kour, Dean Students Welfare, University of Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion.
The event was divided into three sessions-inaugural, debating session and valedictory. In the inaugural session, Dr Seema Sharma, Senior Asstt Prof, The Law School presented the welcome address.
Aparna Kuthiala, Trustee BRSMT presented the profile of the trust and threw light on the objectives of the trust along with the activities undertaken by the same in the form of moot court and the debating competitions along with annual orations to keep alive the spirit of the Trust.
The inaugural and the debating sessions were conducted by Rajneesh Khajuria, Asstt Prof, The Law School.
The participating teams represented different legal institutions and each team comprised of two participants, one spoke for the motion and the other against the motion. The key participating out stationed teams were from Rayat College of Law, Ropar, and Department of Law, Punjab University Chandigarh whereas the local teams were from Dogra Law College Jammu, KC Law College Jammu, and The Law School, University of Jammu.
The performance of the students was evaluated by a panel of experts constituting the jury. The adjudicators of the debate were BL Saraf, Retd District and Sessions Judge, J&K High Court, Pradeep Dutta, Bureau Chief, Times Now and Prof Sucheta Pathania, Head of the English Department, University of Jammu. The debating session was followed by a cultural bonanza wherein the students showcased different performances.
Vikrant Kuthiala was the guest of honour for the valedictory session. He expressed hope for more of such joint collaborations in the form of memorial lectures and mooting workshops.
During valedictory function, Dr Sanjay Gupta, Director, The Law School presented the welcome.
Dr Seema Rohmetra, Organising Secretary of the Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial debate made a detailed presentation of the event.
In the end, Dr Monica Narang presented the vote of thanks.
