SRINAGAR, May 14: In a continued effort to promote physical fitness, discipline and sporting excellence among the youth, Department of Youth Services and Sports (YSS), Jammu & Kashmir, organized a series of district-level inter-zonal competitions across various districts of the Kashmir division. These events not only fostered competitive spirit but also served as a platform to identify young talent for higher-level participation.
In Pulwama, the YSS conducted inter-zonal competitions for boys under 14 and 17 years of age in Badminton, Chess and Kabaddi at Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Pulwama. The tournament was inaugurated by Ab Hamid Dar, Principal of MMBHSS, in the presence of officials from YSS and the School Education Department. The chief guest emphasized the importance of sports in shaping a healthy lifestyle and highlighted career opportunities in sports. An anti-drug pledge was also administered to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
Meanwhile, in Budgam, district-level inter-zonal Table Tennis tournaments for boys and girls under 17 were held at BHSS Budgam and GGHSS Budgam. The event held under the supervision of DYSSO Budgam G.H. Hassan Lone, witnessed active participation from students of various zones and concluded with the support of officials GH Hassan Khanday and Shakeel-ur-Rehman.
In Anantnag, the competitions resumed with great enthusiasm at SRJ Higher Secondary School, Khanabal, featuring Chess, Table Tennis, and Badminton for U-14 and U-17 boys. The Chess event saw Muheeb Riyaz from Zone Anantnag clinching first place, followed by Eleem Zargar from Zone Qazigund and Mir Mujeeb from Zone Bidder. In Badminton, Afham Altaf from Zone Shangus secured the top position in singles, while Jasim Kumar and Junaid Kumar from Zone Achabal won the doubles event. In Table Tennis, Shahiq Fayaz from Zone Anantnag bagged first place, followed by Junaid Dar from Zone Srigufwara and Shehran Qayoom from Zone Anantnag.
Similarly, in Shopian, the department organized inter-zonal Kabaddi competitions for boys at Sports Stadium Batapora and for girls at venues in Zone Imamsahib and Zone Keegam. These events, inaugurated by officials including Reyaz Ahmad Wachkoo and ZPEO Bashir Ahmad Dar, also featured anti-drug pledge ceremonies, reinforcing YSS’s commitment to youth development and social awareness.
