JAMMU, May 1: 2-days Vishal Sharma Memorial Wushu Championship commenced at Indoor Hall MA Stadium, here today.
The Championship was inaugurated by Kuldeep Handoo, general secretary and Sports Officer J&K Police.
500 participants are participating in the championship from different districts and schools of the State.
It is pertinent to mention here that Lt Vishal Sharma was the founder of Wushu in J&K and first ever medalist from the State at National Arena. He was also the founder of Taekwondo in J&K.
On the opening day of the competition Sub-Junior girls and boys events were conducted.
In Under-5 boys, 12kg, Madhu (Army), Govind (AOW), Shaurya (Army) and Ansh (AOW) claimed gold, silver and bronze respectively, while in 15 kg boys category, Maherjot (Army), Gagan (Army), Vidhan (Army) and Mukesh (Bharti Public School) bagged the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively and in 15 kg girls category, Sonam (Army), Kritika (RC) and Vanshika (T THS) claimed the first three positions respectively.
In Under-7 girls 18kg, Bulbul, Ayesh and Rashika won gold, silver and bronze respectively, while in 21kg Aadya, Mehak and Bharti bag first three spots respectively.
In Under-7 boys (18kg), Rakshant, Balraj, Harshdeep and Retvik Sharma claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
Prominent among others present during the opening ceremony were Ajay Paul Gill, Charan Singh Slathia, Kamal Kishore, Lalit Singh Manhas, Abhishek, Ruchi Verma, Pankaj, Rajinder and Ravi Singh, Manager Indoor.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Handoo informed that four players of J&K are in the National Wushu Coaching Camp at SAI Bhopal for the preparation of the Indian team for the 17th Asian Games at Incheon (Korea). The campers include Arun Singh Charak, Pradeep Singh, Raj Singh Narania and Sunil Atri.
