J&K women sport climbing team excels

JAMMU, July 26: The seven-member J&K women sport climbing team gave a creditable performance to win 4 medals including 3 silver and one bronze in the 2nd Women North Zone Sport Climbing Championship which was organized by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, North Zone Committee at IMF complex, New Delhi, recently.
While Shilpa Charak, a national medallist bagged 3 silver medals for J&K in lead, speed climbing and bouldering, Ambreen Fatima of Kargil, presently studying at Jammu, who had clinched three bronze medals in the inaugural edition of the competition last year, had to be content with a single bronze medal in speed climbing this year.
The first place in all the three forms of the competition was secured by Shivpreet Pannu of Punjab, an international climber who recently represented the country in the Asian Youth Championship at Singapore. Asha Gautam, an upcoming climber from Delhi bagged the remaining two bronze medals in lead climbing and bouldering.
The other J&K climbers especially Deepika Dutta, Vishali Sharma and Punam, though quite inexperienced as far as climbing on international standard walls was concerned also put up a good show but could not win any medal.
The competitions were conducted under the overall supervision of Chairman S. Bhattacharjee and Secretary Ram Khajuria, Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, who keenly watched the performance of the budding women climbers and also gave them valuable tips.
Amit Sharma, an international Judge in sport climbing was the President of Jury, another international judge Shawetica Khajuria of J&K and Mitra Ghosh of Delhi, national judge were the Judges of the competition.
They were well supported by Chandan Kumar, Sushma Malik and Shaweta Choudhary.
Naveen Arya, a national Route Setter and a senior coach was the Chief Route Setter who was supported by Paras Verma, another national route setter , Adarsh, an international climber, Lohia and Shashi Kant, a belayer.
