*Over 300 players to take part in cash-rich tourney

JAMMU, Aug 25: The City of Temples will host Senior National Chess Championship-2018, the biggest ever Chess Tournament in Indian history at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, NH, Channi Himmat Bye Pass, here from December 8 to December 18, 2018.
This was informed by Atul Kumar Gupta, President All J&K Chess Association and Chairman Organizing Committee while addressing media persons, here today.
“A cash prize of Rs 20.00, 000 with 1st prize of Rs 5,00,000; 2nd Rs 4,00, 000; 3rd Rs 3, 00,000; 4th Rs 2,00, 000; 5th Rs 1.50, 000; 6th Rs1,00, 000, 7th Rs 1, 00,000, 8th Rs1, 00, 000; 9th Rs 75000 and 10th Rs 75, 000 will be presented to the teams/players,” informed Mr Atul.
He said about 300 selected players and officials from almost all the states of India are expected to participate in the Championship, out of which about 150 International players including many Grandmasters and International Masters will be taking part in it, adding that a0ll the states can field 4 entries each while host J&K will be allowed additional 4 entries. “Besides selected players all Grand Masters, International Masters and Women Grandmasters and World and Asian Champions and other top players as decided by AICF can participate as seeded entries. Players whose FIDE rating is above 2000 only can apply as a donor entry. Winners from this event will represent India in various forthcoming international events”, said the organisers.
Mr Atul further said that the event circular is available on www.aicf.in and www.alljkchess.com.
The organisers extended thanks to AICF for giving such a big event to J&K.
“The main sponsor of this event will be J&K State Sports Council and it will also be supported by AICF and Sports Authority of India. Rest will be managed by small sponsors from J&K. This is a minimum Rs 55,00,000 budget event,” expressed the organisers.
They further said that this type of event will go a long way in diversion of mind of J&K youth towards sports especially chess which can be played in all weather conditions throughout the year.
“10 FIDE Arbiters appointed by AICF will officiate in this mega sports extravaganza. Top games will be shown live on internet through digital chess boards. The Association will give best possible platform to J&K youth in the coming times also,” Mr Atul informed.
Those who attended the Press Conference were Baldev Raj, Ashiq Ahmed, Kuljeet Singh Jamwal,Vikas Nanda, Raj Kumar, Rakesh Kumar Gupta and Dr AS Bhatia.
