JAMMU, May 13: First Inter-School Tournament under World Chess Federation’s programme ‘Chess in Schools’, being organised by All J&K Chess Association in collaboration with Tiny Tots School Sainik Colony commenced.
The tournament, which commenced at Tiny Tots School, around 500 players from 20 different schools of Jammu district are participating.
Former MLA Yashpal Kundal along with Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association declared the tournament open in presence of Taranvir Singh Gujral, Vice President, AJKCA, Kuljeet Singh Jamwal, Press Secretary and Chairman Chess in School Committee of Jammu Division, Raj Kumar, Co-Chairman, Dr Vikram Handa Principal Tiny Tots School besides other dignitaries.
In the first day of the tourney, matches were played in 4 groups–1st to 4th class (boys and girls) and 5th to 8th class (boys and girls). The matches of boys and girls from 9th to 12th classes will be played tomorrow at same venue.
In the tourney, students from any school can participate in it and overall winner will get cash prize of Rs10,000 and gold medal. All the group winners will get Rs 1,000 and gold medals. Silver and bronze medals will also be given to second and third prize winners alongwith certificates. The final of the tournament will be played on May 16.
While speaking, Atul Kumar Gupta stated that J&K Players will get biggest platform to display their talent under this programme under which training will be given to 2 lakh youth of the State.
