JAMMU, Mar 18: Two days long J&K State Wrestling Championship, being organised by J&K Wrestling Association, under the aegis of J&K State Sports Council and J&K Olympic Association got underway at Bharangi Akhara, Shalamar, here today.
Dr SP Vaid, Director General of Police was the Chief Guest on the opening Ceremony and declared the Championship open in an impressive and well attended function.
Dilbag Singh, ADGP Security was the guest of honour, while MLC Ashok Khajuria was the special guest.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary J&K Olympic Association; Ajay Vaid, Secretary J&K Wrestling Association; Dheera Singh, Raju Sharma and Vikas Gupta.
The bouts were officiated by Jai Bharat, Kulvir Singh and Govind Singh.
About 150 wrestlers from the districts of Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Kisthwar, Doda, Samba, Srinagar and Anantnag participated in the Championship.
Chief guest Dr Vaid while speaking on the occasion complimented the organisers for holding this mega event and said that apart from various Sports Associations, J&K Police is also promoting sports and sportspersons by holding sporting extravaganzas under Civic Action Programme. Dilbag Singh and Ashok Khajuria also spoke on the occasion and lauded the efforts of the organisers. Mr Khajuria said Bhajrangi Akhara is very old Akhara in Jammu city from 1945 and has produced a galaxy of National and International Wrestlers.
The Vote of thanks was presented by Dushyant Sharma, President J&K Wrestling Association.
The wrestlers who entered the semifinals: 57 Kg: Rahul Mehra, Ashwani Kumar, Anil Choudhary and Ashiq Hussain.
61 Kg: Kuldeep Singh, Rajinder Singh, Vicku Sharma and Paramveer Singh.
65 Kg: Anil Kumar, Amit Manhas, Irshat Mohammad and Bhushan Mehra.
70 Kg: Ajay Bharti, Sunny Sharma, Arif Khan and Rajinder Singh.
74 Kg: Muneer Hussain, Pawan Kumar, Arshad Ali and Ranjit Singh.
