SRINAGAR, Aug 30: Senior advocate of the High Court, Zaffar Qureshi, has been elected as president of the Kashmir High Court Bar Association.
The former KHCBA president Mian Abdul Qayoom, who didn’t contest Bar elections this year will, however, have full influence on the Bar as he threw his weight behind Qureshi leading to his victory in the Bar elections.
Qayoom supported Qureshi after he decided not to contest elections this year citing personal reasons. Qureshi defeated former Bar president Nazir Ahmad Ronga by securing 338 votes while Ronga secured 237 votes.
The elections for the Bar Association were held at Saddar Court Complex here today and after hectic canvassing for past few weeks by the candidates votes were cast thought out the day today and result was declared at around 6 p.m.
Advocate Ajaz Bedar has been elected as Vice President while Advocate Mohammad Ashraf Bhat as General Secretary of the Bar. Ajaz Ahmad Bedar secured 337 votes while his rival Bashir Ahmad Dar secured 234 votes.
Advocate Mohammad Ashraf Bhat was elected as General Secretary of the Bar. Bhat got 338 votes while Advocate G N Shaheen got 180 votes only. Shaheen was holding the post for last three consecutive terms.
Shabir Ahmad Bhat was elected as the Joint Secretary of the Bar Association. He defeated Javed Samad by small margin of 14 votes.. Hilal Ahmad Wani was elected as the Treasurer of the new body. He defeated Muzaffar Ahmad Rather who secured 240 votes while Wani got 317 votes.
