JAMMU, Oct 29: A mammoth wrestling competition was held at Tacharwana village in Akhnoor, near here today, wherein chairman Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal was the chief guest while SDPO Akhnoor, Mohan Sharma and DySP DAR Jammu, KD Bhagat were the guests of the honour.
SHO Police Station Akhnoor, Inspector Harjeet Singh was the special guest on the occasion.
A total of 90 bouts worth cash rewards of Rs 12 lakh were held in different weight categories from Jammu, Kathua, Reasi and Samba districts as well as wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi fought the bouts.
Pritpal from Punjab won the final bout along with cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh by defeating Monu from New Delhi, while second bout with cash prize of Rs1.4 lakh between Pradeep Splander and Shota Ghani remained inconclusive with referee declaring both as joint winners and 3rd highest bout having cash prize of Rs 1.3 lakh was won by Ravi Beara by defeating Beeniya Pahalwaan of Jammu.
Zorawar Singh said that traditional sports like wrestling are regaining its glory and becoming popular among Jammu youth day by day. He said that these types of competitions change the minds of the young generation and keep them away from drugs.
He called upon the gathering, especially elected Sarpanchs and Panchs, to organize sports activities after short intervals so that rural youth can get opportunities to exhibit their talent.
SDPO Mohan Sharma and DySP KD Bhagat in their respective addresses said that these types of events rejuvenate rich cultural values and also refrains the young blood from taking drugs which is now a bigger social menace.
The members of Dangal committee including KK Sharma, Bodh Raj, Muneer, Kaka Ram, Kasturi Lal, and many others were also present during the event.
