JAMMU, Dec 2: Shivani Charak and Aman Dogra created history for J&K by winning the Speed Climbing crowns in the girls and boys categories respectively in the 21st National Sport Climbing Championship which concluded at Indian Mountaineering Foundation New Delhi.
Shivani added another medal to her kitty by winning a bronze medal in Bouldering also.
In a very keen contest, on the concluding day of the championship, Shivani edged past the highly talented Netra Char of Bangalore (South Zone), to win the title. Similarly, Aman Dogra who had upset highly rated climbers on his way from elimination round to the final, gave another sterling performance to upset an international climber Maibam Chingkheinganba of North East Zone and win the speed climbing title in the boys category.
The other J&K climbers also excelled in various categories but somehow remained medal-less. Mrityunjay Sharma who had raised vision of a medal by reaching the final round by topping the 50 ft high climbing wall in the semi final could not repeat his performance and finished 6th in Lead Climbing. He also finished 7th in Speed climbing and bouldering.
Similarly, Shilpa gave a good account of herself to finish at 4th and 5th place in Speed climbing and bouldering respectively. In lead climbing final Shivani was tied at the 2nd place with 4 other climbers but slipped to 4th position when the result was determined on the basis of ranking in the semi final. Ajay Deep Singh and Asma Gul, both state champions in Sub Junior Boys and girls categories also performed well to secure 4th and 10th position respectively.
Over all it was an excellent performance by the 6-member team with 5 climbers entering the final rounds in various forms of competitions and two climbers winning two gold and a silver medal besides 3 climbers securing the 4th place in their respective categories.
The State team was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
