Sahu declares open Reasi District Fencing C’ship

KATRA, Oct 21: Reasi District Fencing Championship organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board at Sports Complex, Katra was declared open by Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Chief Executive Officer, SMVD Shrine Board, here today.
As many as 112 boys and girls under the age group of 14, 17 and 19 years are taking part in the Championship which includes Sabre, Foil and Epee events.
Sahu, who was chief guest on the occasion, said that it is heartening to note that the game is achieving new heights and dimensions in the district as more than 150 fencers have so far participated in the national level championships from the area in the past and won more than 20 medals, including gold at national scene.
Earlier, the fencers participating in the tournament were introduced to Mr. Sahu.
Ashok Kumar, Director Sports, SMVDSB, who was the guest of honour, said that the fencers of Reasi district are doing well in the game which is one of the recognized disciplines of the Olympics.
Earlier, Dr. Swaran Singh Chib, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Reasi, in his welcome address presented a brief account of sports activities being organized by the department in Reasi and Katra areas.
Prominent among those present on the inaugural function were Rajinder Singh, OSD, SMVDSB, Ashwani Katoch, Ajay Wazir and other heads of the various educational institutions of Reasi and Katra.
The matches were conducted by Ajay Kumar, a qualified umpire.
In Under-14 Foil Boys, Bharat Sangral of Convent, Reasi won gold, Gourav of Evergreen School, Arnas bagged silver, while Aryan Chandail of Gurukul Public, Reasi and Ragav Khajuria, Gurukul Public, Reasi claimed bronze medals.
In Under-14 Sabre Boys, Akshat Sharma of Gurukul Public, Reasi claimed gold, Sourav of Trikuta Public School, Reasi clinchéd silver, while Pasth Vashist of Convent, Reasi and Vikas, Bhartiyam Vidhya Mandir, Reasi shared bronze medal.
