Punjab drubs SSB (6-1) to lift title

JAMMU, Dec 14: Star-studed Punjab thrashed SSB by six goals to one (6-1) in the summit clash and lifted the title trophy of the 61st All India Police Hockey Championship, which concluded at KK Hakhu Astroturf Stadium, here today.
The Championship was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department in collaboration with Hockey J&K, under the aegis of Hockey India.
Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani was the chief guest on the valedictory function, while Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Parsad presided over the function. Additional Director General of Police K Rajendra was also present on the occasion.
Earlier, in the final, Punjab struck the early blows as Satvinder Singh pelted splendid two goals in 3rd and 10th minute of the match, which was followed a superb goal by Gaganjeet Singh in 17th minute. However, Surachandra of SSB scored a goal in 19th minute to decrease the lead by one goal. But a goal by Amanjeet Singh in 30th minute, followed by goal netted by Baljeet Singh Dhilon in 54th minute and the second goal by Gaganjeet Singh in 62nd minute helped Punjab to win the match by a convincing margin.
Meanwhile, in the hard-liner, defending champion BSF blanked J&K by three goals to nil (3-0). Ranjeet Singh scored the goals in first and 46th minute, while Varinderjeet Singh netted the goal in 8th minute.
The match was officiated by Anil Kumar, Suresh Thakur, Vijay Kishore and Imtiaz-Ud-din.
Later-on, the chief guest along with other dignitaries distributed the prizes among the winners and the runners-up teams.
“Jammu and Kashmir Police has been playing a pivotal role in promoting sports in the State and honing sports skills of the youth,” Mr Wani said in his address.
He said such events provide sports lovers an opportunity to witness high tech competitions among national level teams and inspire them to refine their talent.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP), Ashok Prasad said JKP is organising various sports events at different levels to refine the talent within and outside the department.
“JKP has stood high in the sports arena, besides its professional duties, the organisation has hosted different national level championships in the State,” the DGP said.
The Championship was hosted by Jammu and Kashmir Police, which lasted for eight days in which 26 teams from different States and Union Territories participated.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Hon’ble MLC Jahangir Mir, Former DGP J&K, A K Chaturvedi, Home Secretary, Suresh Kumar, ADGPs, Dr. Ram Lubhaya, S P Vaid and Naveen Aggarwal, IGPs V.K Singh, Dilbag Singh, Dr B.Srinivas, H K Lohia, Abdul Ghani Mir and M Sulaiman Salaria. Other senior police officers and a large public gathering also witnessed the final match, closing ceremony.
