JAMMU, Dec 15: Even though women’s cricket is growing, players for J&K consistently fail to demonstrate intent and application when they play against more powerful teams. This was evident today when J&K faced Mumbai in the Women’s U-23 T20 Trophy at Barasat Ground in Kolkata.
Earlier, batting first, J&K managed to score a paltry total of 84 runs in the stipulated 20 overs, losing 4 wickets in the process. Opening batter Bawandeep Kaur top scored with 24 runs off 30 balls, while consistent Chitra Singh Jamwal contributed unbeaten 22 off 35 balls with one boundary. Shambhavi Rajput who was again promoted to open the innings scored 8 runs in 24 balls, while skipper Rudrakshi Chib contributed 13 off 14 balls and Manya Banotra scored 4 runs off 13 balls.
Lack of intent was simply on display as the team lost just 4 wickets and scored only 81 runs in the shortest format. Moreover, some batters faced too many balls to score a few runs, which is a point of serious concern. For Mumbai, Fatima Jaffer was the pick of the bowlers, who took 2 wickets by conceding 16 runs in 4 overs, while Zeal Dmello claimed one wicket.
In reply, Mumbai chased the target easily in 12.2 overs by losing one wicket, thus won the match by 9 wickets. Skipper Riya Chaudhari top scored with unbeaten 46 runs off 34 balls studded with 7 boundaries, while Tushi Shah contributed 36 runs off 38 balls with 5 fours. Madhu Devi was the only successful bowler for J&K, who took the lone wicket to fall.
