*Sports lovers feel aroma of IPL in Temple City

JAMMU, Apr 18: In presence of mammoth gathering, Kavinder Gupta, Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly inaugurated the ‘Police Public Cricket Premier League-PPCPL’ in an impressive gathering at Govt Science College Hostel ground, here today.
S P Vaid, Additional DGP Hqrs J&K was the guest of honour on the occasion.
Prominent among other dignitaries present on the occasion were SM Sahai, ADGP Armed Police, Dilbag Singh, MD Police Housing Corporation, Danish Rana, IGP Jammu Zone, M L Nehru, Vice President BCCI and Arvinder Singh Micky, Chairman JKCA.
Spectators present in thousands felt the aroma of IPL in the City of Temples as the entire ground possessed a festive atmosphere.
Chief guest Mr Gupta in his inaugural speech appreciated the efforts and role of J&K Police for organizing such a mega sports event on the pattern of IPL in which attractive cash prizes have been announced.
He said that such events are essential for channelizing energy of youth in right direction.
Earlier, Shakeel Ahmed Beig, DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range while speaking on the occasion said that the cricket tournament has been organized on the pattern of IPL, adding that the players participating in it have been selected from various selection trial camps held in Rajouri, Bhaderwah, Udhampur, Kathua and Jammu.
He said the motive behind the tournament is to bridge the gap between police and public, to promote sports culture and channelize the youth energy in right direction.
Among other senior officers present on the occasion were Youginder Koul, IGP IR Jammu, S A Watali, IGP Armed Jammu and Mubarak Ahmed Ganai, IGP Telecom J&K.
Meanwhile, in the inaugural match, Kashmir Steel Warriors got better of Chenab Gas Royals Jammu by a narrow margin of 8 runs in an exciting contest.
Winning the toss and batting first, Kashmir Steel Warriors scored a fighting total of 158 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Abid Nabi was the top scorer with 50 runs off 33 balls, studded with 7 delectable boundaries, while Usman Pandit contributed 42 runs to the total. Waseem Raza and Rahul Mussa chipped in with 13 and 12 runs to the total respectively. For Chenab Gas Royals, Rahil Singh was the pick of the bowlers, who captured 3 important wickets, while Pardeep Bali scalped 2 wickets.
In reply, Chenab Gas Warriors managed to score 150 runs and lost the match by a narrow margin of 8 runs. Bandeep Singh top scored with 37 runs, while Vimarsh Kaw and Pardeep Bali contributed 30 runs each. For Kashmir Steel Warriors, Wasim Raza was the pick of the bowlers, who scalped 4 important wickets, Abid Nabi and Nazir claimed 2 wickets each. Abid was declared man of the match, while Bandeep got the award for hitting maximum sixes and Usman Pandit was awarded for taking an acrobatic catch.
In the post match presentation, Uttam Chand, SSP Jammu in presence of Rajnish Pran, Parshotam Sharma and Rajesh Gill gave away the prizes. Winning team was awarded with a cash prize of Rs10, 000.
The proceedings of the day were conducted by anchors Rajesh Dhar and RP Singh.
In tomorrow’s fixture, Simula Superstars will lock horns with Ishar Daredevils, while Jammu Khalsa Kings-XI will take on Kashmir Steel Warriors.
