IPL team owners appear to have realised that success does not come along by spending more in IPL auction and made judicious decisions to pick right players to strike right balance in their teams.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the IPL-7 auctions here, Kings XI Punjab owner Ness Wadia said spending more money does not bring success but judicious spending helps strike right balance in the team.
With their judicious buying Rajasthan Royals and Punjab were in the position to save Rs 5.55 ctore and Rs 4.10 crore, respectively.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders saved Rs one crore each.
“Penny saved is penny earned. Every rupee saved is rupee earned. We have realised over the years that we need balanced team. We have seen money does not bring success. It is not all about taking the stars. It is about building the future,” Wadia said.
Commenting in support of Wadia’s views on judicious buying, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) MD and CEO Venky Mysore said he did not go berserk on single player and their idea was to judiciously spend on right kind of players.
“When we went for auction. Our idea was to spend right on every player. So we never went berserk on any single player. Before we entered the auctions, we knew what is the kind of amount we are going to spend,” he said.
Wadia said his team management could take dynamic decisions with flexibility because of Coach Sanjay Bangar who has immense knowledge about domestic players.
Unlike Tom Moody and Micheal Beven, Bangar was always available with the team management for developing strategies to pick players, Wadia said.
“Bevan and Moody were not always available with us due to various reasons. But this time, we had Bangar who was available,” he said adding that they started strategising in November last soon after signing Bangar for the job. (PTI)
