JU sweeps titles in 1st State Universities Sports Championships

*Debutant SMVDU, BGSBU show promise

JAMMU, Apr 8: University of Jammu swept titles of various events in the ongoing 1st State Universities Sports Championships, organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, here.
While University of Jammu clinched most of the titles, debutant Shri Mata Vaisnodevi University (SMVDU) Katra and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri performed well and claimed good number of silver and bronze medals in this prestigious Championship.
Minister for Forests, Ch Lal Singh was the chief guest on the occasion, while ADGP Security, Dilbag Singh was the guest of honour and Registrar University of Jammu, Prof Keshav Sharma presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Ch Lal Singh terming the students of Universities as the scholars, said that they are the pillars of the nation and it is their duty to harness their energies and dynamism in a positive direction.
To a question as to what action should be taken against those who allegedly disrespected the National Anthem on the inaugural function of the Championship, Mr Singh said that Nation comes first and then other things, adding that if someone is found guilty, he should be punished.
He said that sportspersons are the messengers of peace and the big events like this Championship serve as a launching pad to bring peace and harmony in the State.
Mr Singh alongwith the guest of honour and other dignitaries distributed trophies and other prizes among the winners and runners-up teams on the occasion.
Earlier, Prof Avtar Singh Jasrotia, Director, Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu presented welcome address and highlighted the achievements of his Department.
Prof Keshav Sharma, Registrar also spoke on the occasion.
The University of Jammu lifted titles of cricket for men and women, beating Kashmir University in men’s section and BGSBU Rajouri in the women’s section summit clash. The third place in men’s section went to BGSBU Rajouri.
In Badminton men, Jammu University bagged gold, RSS Jammu claimed silver and SMVDU clinched bronze, while in Badminton women, Jammu University emerged winner, while Central University Jammu and SMVDU Katra claimed 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
In Basketball men, Jammu University won the title, while NIT Kashmir and SMVDU Katra claimed second and third positions respectively.
Basketball women’s title went to JU, while SMVDU Katra clinched 2nd place and the third place was bagged by Central University Jammu.
In Volleyball men, JU bagged first spot, while the second and third positions were claimed by KU and BGSBU respectively.
In Volleyball women again JU, KU and BGSBU claimed first, second and third places respectively.
The Football men’s title went to Islamic University for Science and Technology, Srinagar, while Jammu University and Kashmir University remained first and second runners-up respectively.
Jammu University bagged Table Tennis men and women titles, while the second and third places in each section went to SMVDU and BGSBU respectively.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr KA Tarzan, Director Sports Islamic University for Science & Technology; Ashok Kumar, Director Sports, SMVDU; Mohd Din, Director Sports BGSBU and Physical Directors Dr Vinod Bakshi and Ajaz Malik.
