JKP to host All India Police Water Sports Championship in Srinagar: Dilbag Singh

SRINAGAR, July 25: Jammu and Kashmir Police is hosting 14th All India Police Water Sports Championship-2015 in summer capital. The 5 day long Championship being held under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board will be held at world famous Dal Lake, Srinagar from July 27.
This was disclosed by Managing Director Police Housing Corporation, Dilbag Singh who is also Organising secretary for the championship, at a press conference held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) here today. He said that the opening ceremony of the mega event will be held on 27th of July which would conclude on July 31, 2015.
He said, the event was scheduled to be held in 2014 but was postponed in view of Parliamentary and Assembly elections in the State. He said that the first chapter of All India Police Water Sports Championship was held in Punjab in 2001. Since then, it is being regularly hosted by different police organizations of the country under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board. Jammu and Kashmir Police is hosting the prestigious Championship third time. 15 teams of different central and State Police organizations from across the country have confirmed their participation in the event which include SSB, BSF, CRPF, ITBP, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, J&K, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh Police, he added.
Mr. Singh said that more than 450 athletes from across the country will prove their mettle in the mega event in Canoeing, Kayaking and Rowing. In Canoeing different competitions, scheduled to be held are C1 (200 m, 500 m & 1000 m), C2 (200 m, 500 m & 1000 m) and C4(200 m, 500 m & 1000 m) .In Kayaking the athletes will compete in K1 (200 m, 500 m & 1000 m), K2 (200 m, 500 m & 1000 m), K4 (200 m, 500 m & 1000 m). The Rowing competitions include Single Scull (500 m & 1000 m), double Scull (500 m & 1000 m) and Coxless Scull (500 m & 1000 m). During the championship medal presentation ceremonies will be held on daily basis in the afternoon session, said Dilbag.
He added that to organize the event in a befitting manner various committees and sub-committees have been constituted and assigned different tasks. Games secretariat and Control Room has been established to coordinate among the committees, being headed by senior police officers.
Organising Secretary said that water Sports is one among the most flourishing and fast spreading sport in the world and J&K is lucky enough for having the potential to flourish and progress in water sports. Holding of such sports activities in the J&K State will make newer avenues for the sports lovers in the State. He said that besides maintaining law & order JKP has been working to promote sports culture in the State. We have been organizing programmes to, identify the talent and provide them a platform so that in future they come up as players of national and international repute. The Organisation is having world class athletes in water sports and others games, who have represented not only the State but the country as well. Jammu & Kashmir Police is a regular participant of the All India Police, he said.
He further disclosed that JKP Aquatic team won 8 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze medals in the 3rd All India Police Water Sports Championship in 2003 and lifted the championship trophy during its 8th edition in 2009. Zahoor Ahmad, Parvez Ahmad and Farooq Ahmad of Police Aquatic team bagged one Gold and One bronze medal each in the 13th edition of this event held at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. “Police sports personnel are the back bone of J&K State Sports bodies, while representing the State and the country in national and international games. At present J&K Police has more than 18 central sports teams including 4 women teams.”
