JAMMU, Sept 16: International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was celebrated by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Boards (SMVDSB), Katra and Government Degree College (GDC), Udhampur, today.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, SMVDSB organised an elocution competition at Sanjeevani Auditorium of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNHS), Kakryal. The topic of the contest was ‘Ozone and Climate Change’.
The event organised in collaboration with DPS Kakryal was part of the awareness programme which has been launched on directions of the Shrine Board on various environmental issues.
Students from class 8th to 12th of DPS Kakryal participated in the elocution contest. They spoke about importance of preserving and restoring fragile yet vital Ozone Layer of Earth’s Atmosphere which filters the harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays and various measures to preserve it.
Preeti Thakur stood first, while Rhythm Sharma and Sucheta Devi stood first and second runner-up respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr MK Kumar, Additional CEO of the Shrine Board and organiser of the event said that such initiatives are aimed at increasing awareness about the importance of the Ozone Layer and other major environmental issues for eco-system balance and environmental stability among students, youth and the public at large.
He gave away prizes to the students who were adjudged best in the elocution contest.
Sanjay Sharma, Principal, DPS in his concluding remarks threw light on the high importance of the preservation of Ozone Layer.
Among others present were Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai, CAO, SMVDNSH, Sunil Narayan, Zonal Director, NH, Manu Hansa, Asstt CEO, SMVDSB, Rajan Gupta, XEN, Dr Gopal Sharma, DDM, Vandana Sharma, HM, DPS and Simmi Sharma, PRO, DPS.
Meanwhile, Department of Botany/EVS, GDC Udhampur organized a quiz competition in collaboration with DST, Udhampur to celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, in which students of all faculties participated actively. Prof Sheetu Raina of EVS Department presented welcome address. In the competition, Team Vayu comprising of Rajat, Vishal Singh, Mehak Sharma, Roopsy and Vandana secured first positions, whereas the second position was bagged by Team Prithivi comprising of Vikas Bhat, Mohinder Singh, Vishal Sharma, Priyanka and Parul. The third prize was clinched by Team Neer comprising of Kewal Singh, Chandermohan, Shabnam, Baniti and Sarita, whileas the consolation prizes were presented to Team Agni comprising of Vishal Singh, Gourab Verma, Rahul Singh, Simridhi Sharma and Nitika and Team Akash comprising of Aman, Nitish Khajuria, Arun, Sahil Singh and Ajay Sharma.
The chief guest on the occasion was Prof Rakesh Kumar Gupta, while Dr Sanjay Kharoo, District Coordinator DST Udhampur was also present.
In the end, Prof Romesh Kumar Atri, HoD Botany proposed the vote of thanks.
Among others present were Dr Udhey Bhanu, Convener DBT Star College Scheme, Prof Suram Chand, HoD Geography, Prof Sumiksha Thakur, Prof Jawaid Sarver, Dimple Manhas, Usha Kumari, Priya and Mohit Kumar.
