JAMMU, Nov 12: 14 students of KC Public School received the IAYP Bronze Awards in a ceremonial function held in the School Activity Hall, here today.
The International Award for Young People (IAYP) is a global programme which young people pursue all over the world to earn Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards after completing certain levels of self-motivated achievement in four areas of endeavour, namely Adventure, Physical Recreation, Acquisition of Skill and Social Service. The programme also goes by the name of Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in England and some other countries.
In the period of one year, these 14 students of KC Public School, undertook a trek of 5 days in Himachal Pradesh for their adventure requirement and rendered more than 15 hours of services at a Home for people with special needs by visiting the inmates from time to time and interacting with them to build up their self-esteem and to engage them in meaningful activities.
They chose various fitness and health activities and attained a degree of skill in them over a period of 3 months to fulfill their Physical Recreation requirement. They also learnt various hands-on skills like cooking, repairing gadgets etc to complete their requirement under Acquisition of Skills. Their levels of achievement were assessed from time to time by adult assessors selected for the purpose.
Major Dr Chetna Arora, a young parent of the school and an Army Doctor was the chief guest in the function, who presented certificates and medals to the successful Bronze Award aspirants.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Arora emphasized the need for upholding the value of life skills like discipline, respect for others and impeccable conduct.
