Handoo, Saraf get key SAWF roles; India to host 2027 South Asian Wushu C’ship

JAMMU, May 24: Bhupender Singh Bajwa, President of the Wushu Association of India, has been unanimously elected President of the South Asian Wushu Federation during the SAWF Congress held in Colombo.
In the same elections, Vijay Saraf was unanimously elected as Treasurer of the federation, while Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo has been appointed as Technical Chairman, marking a notable achievement for Jammu and Kashmir in international sports administration.
The appointments have been widely hailed as a milestone for the Union Territory, as both Saraf and Handoo, regarded as leading figures in J&K sports, have been entrusted with key responsibilities at the South Asian level, reflecting their experience and contribution to the growth of Wushu in the region.
During the Congress, it was also decided that the South Asian Wushu Championship will be hosted in India in 2027, along with coaching and judging seminars to be conducted prior to the event. The championship will be held after a gap of two years, aiming to further strengthen the sport across the region.
It was further decided that qualifying athletes from South Asian countries will be invited to train with the Indian national Wushu team ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, with the aim of enhancing technical standards and regional cooperation.
Kuldeep Handoo said he would focus on strengthening technical systems across South Asia, while Vijay Saraf said he would work to take Wushu in Jammu and Kashmir to new heights.
Earlier, Suhel Ahmed was elected as Executive Board Member of SAWF and appointed Head of the Constitutional Committee. Sudershan was elected member of the Constitutional Committee, while Shamboo Seth was elected as member of the Constitutional Committee and Traditional Committee of SAWF.
