JAMMU, Nov 21: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir delivered a spectacular performance at the 36th Senior National Fencing Championship held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, New Delhi, securing five medals and finishing as overall runners-up. Competing against top athletes from all States, UTs and the Services team, the J&K contingent showcased remarkable talent, discipline and competitive spirit. The Services team took the overall first position, while J&K claimed a proud second.
J&K bagged two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, further strengthening its growing reputation as a national fencing powerhouse. In the individual events, Shreya Gupta continued her dominance by winning gold in Women’s Sabre, while Vishal Thapar secured bronze in Men’s Sabre. In Men’s Épée, Sufyan Waheed Sohil of Ramban added another bronze with an impressive performance.
In the team events, J&K clinched gold in Men’s Sabre, with the quartet of Vishal Thapar, Sagar Sahi, Mayank Sharma and Harshit Kohli defeating the Services team. The Men’s Épée team-Sufyan Waheed Sohil, Ajay Kumar, Shivaansh Kapoor and Saaid ur Rehman-secured a silver medal, displaying outstanding coordination and resilience.
JKFA president Vijay Kumar and Secretary General Adv. Supriya Chauhan hailed the achievement as historic, praising the athletes, coaches and support staff. Senior referees, coaches and former fencers also congratulated the team, noting that J&K’s consistent rise in fencing continues to inspire young talent across the region.
