Evengical Church lifts Inter-Church Cricket Cup

JAMMU, July 14: Evengical Church trounced St Peter’s Church by 2 wickets in a thrilling contest to lift the Inter-Church Cricket Championship at Alexander Memorial School, here today.
The tournament in which 12 teams drawn from different Churches of Jammu province participated was organized by Christian Sports Organization J&K, with the objective to divert the attention of the youths from drugs and alcohols and help them not to derail from the mainstream, besides promoting sports and games in the State.
The slogan of the tournament was “Be Healthy – and Don’t Do Drugs”.
Amrit Malhotra, chairman, Legislative Council, J&K  was the chief guest in the valedictory function, while Fr Kuriakose, Incharge Priest of Gandhi Nagar Church presided over the function and Rev Nissar Incharge Priest of Evengical Church was the guest of honour. The chief guest and the other dignitaries distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up teams.
Earlier, in the summit clash, St Peter’s Catholic Church  won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 125 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the stipulated 12 overs. Ravi top scored with 36 runs including 4 sixes, while Rajesh Gill contributed 29 runs to the total. Sonu Bhatti was the pick of the bowlers, who took 3 wickets, while Tuffy and Rippan claimed 2 wickets each.
In reply, Evengical Church needed 10 runs in the last over of the match and clinched victory on the fourth ball in an exciting contest. Danny hit 2 sixes in second and fourth ball of the over and helped his team to claim the title trophy,Rippan , Jerry and Rajan scored 35, 25, 20 runs respectively.
Ravi took 3 wickets, while Neetu and Avinash  took 2 wickets each. Jerry was adjudged man of the match for his  alround performance, while Ambrose and Ravi were declared man of the series and best batsman respectively. Nitu Khokher was adjudged as best bowler.
In his address Amrit Malhotra lavished praise for the organizers for conducting the event and assured installation of Bowling Machine for the cricketers to help them polish their skill.
Fr Kuriakose also spoke on the occasion.
David Mattoo and Victor Sotra were the organizing secretaries of the tournament and the tournament was organized under the overall supervision of Rajesh Gill, president, Christian Sports Organization J&K.
