*Says massive campaign underway to make J&K ideal water sports destination

SRINAGAR, Aug 30: Minister for Housing Horticulture, Culture and Youth Services and Sports, Raman Bhalla has said that besides upgrading and developing sports infrastructure, a massive campaign is underway to explore water sports infrastructure and talent required to make J&K an ideal water sports destination so that State could host National and International level water sports events.
This was stated by the Minister after inaugurating 3rd National Dragon Boat Race Championship-2014 at Water Sports Centre, Nehru park Dal Lake today.
The championship organized by J&K State Sports Council (J&KSSC) shall culminate on September 2, during which Dragon boat race of 200 meters, 500 meters and 2000 meters race events are being held. As many as 300 players of 13 teams including team officials from 13 States all over the country are participating in the event.
Additional Director General of Police, S M Sahai was also present on the occasion.
The Minister said Government has prioritized the sports sector and has launched number of programmes and projects for its development besides making better aqua-sports infrastructure across the State.
The Minister said that our State is rich in talent and youth have great talent in all kind of sports activities and Government is making all efforts for providing better sports infrastructure on modern lines so that youth of State are able to exhibit their talent with zest and zeal besides prove their mettle in national and international level sports events.
He also said that Government will encourage and provide every possible support to the budding talent so that they perform best and excel with shining future besides, bring laurels for the State in national and international sports competitions.
In men’s event, J&K clinched gold in 2000 meters, while Indian Navy and MP claimed clinched silver and bronze medals.
In mixed event, J&K, MP and Delhi won gold, silver and bronze medals repectively
