JAMMU, Aug 30: Uma Bharti, Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has assured that the Tawi Andolan activists, to take up Tawi related grievance of people of Jammu Province with State Government, and received memorandum related to Tawi grievances, here today.
The Union Minister, held a special meeting at the Government Guest House, Canal Road, with advocate Chander Mohan Sharma wherein other prominent founder members of Tawi Andolan, appealed to the visiting Minister for including Tawi river in the National Ganga Rejuvenation Plan, just as the Sutluj river of Punjab is included in the same.
A memorandum was also submitted to the Minister of Tawi Andolan which reads as creation of a Tawi Rejuvenation and Development Board/ Authority; Stopping river bed encroachments and land grabbing; Immediate steps for stopping illegal quarrying in the river bed; Inclusion of the Tawi in National Ganga Rejuvenation plan; Development and preservation of the ecosystem of the river Tawi, Immediate action plan for the diversion of untreated sewerage flowing into the Tawi; Beautification of the both sides of Tawi banks for Tourist attraction.
The memorandum says that similar scientific plan of action for the rejuvenation of other tributaries of Tawi and rivers; like river Devika entering into Tawi; Preservation and rejuvenation of all water bodies of Jammu region, like lakes, ponds, talabs, boulis, springs, khuds, nallas, etc;
Tawi Bachao Andolan was represented by a cross section of prominent citizens including; Prof Bhola Nath Sharma, Prof Rajinder Misra Ashawni Gupta Subash Gupta, Vikram Randhava, Yogender Khajuria, Dr Prem Sharma Chanerkant, Raj Kumar Gupta Kulbir Singh Chib, Shilpi Verma, Darshan Singh. Ravi Sharma. Shakti Singh Thakur, Mitu Rajput, Anju Dogra, Rajesh Dogra, Rakesh Raina, KanavSharma, Arnav Sharma and Zulafkar Choudhry.
Chander Mohan while discussing the issue with visiting dignitary stressed the need of thorough probe into the encroachment of forest and the land adjoining to Tawi and its catchment areas.
