Bengal took the driver’s seat against Jammu and Kashmir in Ranji Trophy match on Day 2 after their bowlers tumbled five wickets in 183 runs as the visitors were chasing 387 runs at Eden Gardens here today. J&K were still trailing by 204 runs with five wickets in hand in the first innings with debutant batting Shubhan Singh Pundir 34 and Bandeep Singh not out 27 when the stumps were closed for the day.
Earlier, Bengal added only 75 runs to their overnight score of 312 for seven.
Not out batsman Wriddhiman Saha (129) made another 37 to this total before falling to Parvez Rasool delivery on 166. Wicket-keeper batsman Saha, who returned from Australia only Sunday, hit his 9th domestic ton and was the chief architect for Bengal moderate score of 387 all out.
Saha hit 23 boundaries and two sixes while facing 252 balls and Ashoke Dinda, who was not out on 11 last night, made 25, a significant contribution from a bowler. J & K bowlers Ram Dayal emerged as the highest wicket taker finising 4/115, followed by Parvez Rasool 3/70 and Mohammed Mudhasir, Waseem Raza and Aamir Aziz took one each respectively. J&K were hit hard when their opener Adil Reshi (1) was bowled by Dinda and debutant Imran Haroon fell on 28 when he was caught by Manoj Tiwary off Laxmi Ratan Shukla.
Ian Dev Singh, however, resisted bravely the pacers and spinners of Bengal, and made 72 before falling to Sourashish Lahiri’s delivery giving a simple catch to Tiwary. Singh hit ten 4s and two over boundaries facing 103 balls. Bengal pacer Amitava Banerjee marked his presence taking for the first time two wickets conceding 51 runs, and Dinda, Shukla and Lahiri shared three wickets among them. (UNI)
