Banning IPL not a solution, make strict laws: Kirmani

Ranchi, June 1: Terming the spot-fixing allegations on cricket players as ‘utterly shameful’, former test cricketer and ‘star’ wicketkeeper of his era Syed Kirmani today stressed for the need of a ‘strong’ law to deal effectively with such crimes but said that banning tourneys like the Indian Premier League (IPL) was not a possible solution.
Talking to reporters here the prominent member of 1983 world cup winning Indian squad said, ‘It was utterly shameful that players were involved in things like betting and spot fixing.
A new strict law must be formulated to control such crimes but cricket in all its formats including the IPL must keep going. It was not proper to ban any of it. It is also possible that a fourth format may soon add up in the current three.’
Kirmani said, ‘ the probe of IPL spot fixing issue must be done in a clean and transparent manner and the culprits, who have brought same to the game, should be brought to book.’ (PTI)
