JAMMU, Oct 23: An Asian Games’ medallist has been waiting for a promise of Government job made by then Government of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018 when he had won Bronze medal in 18th Asian Games in the discipline of Wushu, held at Jakarta.
After winning Bronze medal, Wushu Player Surya Bhanu Partap Singh was felicitated by then Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satya Pal Malik in a function held at Raj Bhawan Srinagar with Rs 10 lakh cash prize while his Coach, Kuldeep Handoo was also awarded with cash prize 2 lakh for their outstanding performances in Asian Games.
With this achievement, he has become first player of Jammu and Kashmir who won medal in Asian Games.
“During the felicitation ceremony at Srinagar, the then Governor also announced that the Wushu player would be appointed as DySP while his coach, Inspector Kuldeep Handoo will also be awarded for this achievement and also was to be promoted from the post of Inspector to DySP in J&K Police but after lapse of two year from the date of commitment, the Asian Games’ medallist and his coach still not get appointment letter from the Government nor his coach got promotion at next level from Inspector to DySP,” said Asian Games’ medallist while talking with Excelsior.
He further said that both the proposals have been submitted to Home Department vide letters No. GZ/G-13/OOT/2012 -11/2018 dated 10/111/2018 in respect of Inspector Kuldeep Handoo and GBM-11/2018/73566 dated 13/11/2018 in respect of SPO Surya Bhanu Partap Singh but ironically both the proposal were gathering dust in General Administration Department since 2018 and nobody seems bothered about it.
“Since 2018, he (Bronze medallist) running from pillar to post and knocked every door of the Civil Secretariat to get appointment letter but nothing achieved so far,” said medal winning Wushu player.
“Like Bhanu Pratap Singh- an another Wushu player namely Rajinder Singh, who trounced Russian three time World Champions in World Cup 2017 held at Russia and won Silver medal for the nation. Rajinder Singh also excelled in various World Championships, Asian Championships and Asian Cups on various occasions at national level like Surya Bhanu Partap Singh but he is still jobless and dependent on his parents even for his daily diets, said a sportsperson serving JK Sports Council while wishing anonymity.
It is not a saga of Bhanu Partap Singh, there are so many players of Jammu and Kashmir who have represented India in various disciplines but have been compelled to arrange their both ends meets by running coaching institutes or have been engaged in different Government Departments as contractual.
“If we compare World Champion players with adjoining States’ players like Haryana. The Haryana Govt had awarded with 70 lakhs as cash prize and a Government job if someone won Bronze medal at international level while Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.50 crores along with Government jobs have been fixed for Silver and Gold medal awardees respectively but it is the only Jammu and Kashmir UT which is and disregarding their players in term of money and jobs,” said another player.
He further alleged that on one hand, these players are running pillar to post to get jobs which was promised by the Government after representing India at International level but on other side, the cricket players of Jammu and Kashmir were getting Government jobs only for playing in Indian team.
