NEW DELHI, Aug 16: General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), felicitated Indian Army sportspersons for their remarkable achievements at the Paris Olympics 2024 during a ceremony held at South Block. The event was not only a celebration of their accomplishments but also recognition of the Indian Army’s significant role in nurturing and promoting sporting talent across the nation.
The Indian contingent brought home a total of six medals from Paris, including one silver and five bronze. Sub Major Neeraj Chopra, a standout performer from the Indian Army, won India’s only silver medal in Javelin, further solidifying his legacy as one of the country’s top athletes. Sub Bommandevara Dhiraj also achieved a commendable 4th position in Archery (Recurve).
The Indian Army has been instrumental in fostering Olympic excellence through its Mission Olympic Wing (MOW), established in 2001. This initiative identifies and nurtures young sporting talent, providing them with the platform and resources needed to compete at the highest levels. The Army’s commitment to sports is further demonstrated by the establishment of two Girls Sports Companies and 18 Boys Sports Companies, aimed at empowering youth across the nation.
During the Paris Olympics, the Indian Army’s representation was significant, comprising 11.11% of the Indian contingent. Their contributions accounted for 16.66% of the overall medal tally, highlighting the Army’s pivotal role in India’s Olympic success. General Dwivedi expressed immense pride in the athletes’ discipline, perseverance, and dedication, which embody the core values of the Indian Army.
