Divum drubs defending champion Vipul to win men’s singles title

*Vikram, Vipul brothers claim men’s doubles title

JAMMU, Feb 21: Divum Gupta showed composure and promise, besides displaying extraordinary shuttling skills, anticipation and motor ability to defeat the defending champion Vipul Saini in the men’s singles final to win the title in 42nd J&K State Badminton Championship, organized by J&K Badminton Association at Police Lines Badminton Hall, here today.
However, the duo of Vipul Saini and Vikram Saini defeated the pair of Divum Gupta and Raghav Dogra, trainees of SAI Day Boarding Scheme in the doubles event to win the title.
Shive Kumar Sharma, Joint Secretary J&K State Sports Council was the chief guest on the valedictory function, who distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up players on the occasion.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Sudershan Singh Wazir, president J&K Badminton Association, Natha Ram Gupta, chairman of the Badminton Association, Prem Dewan, Kiran Wattal, besides Dr OD Sharma, general secretary J&K Badminton Association, Balbir Singh Jamwal and Satpal Sharma.
Earlier, in men’s singles final, Divum Gupta defeated strong contender Vipul Saini, champion from last three years by 2-1 (21-7, 15-21, 23-21), while in men’s doubles summit clash, Vipul and Vikram drubbed Divum and Raghav by 2-1 (21-15, 19-21, 21-13).
In Under-15 boys singles, Aesh Goswami trounced Puranjay by (21-10, 21-14), while in Under-15 girls singles, Naman topples Rashmi Kashyap by (21-18, 15-21, 21-19).
In Under-17 boys singles, Raghav Dogra trounced Aesh Goswami by (26-14, 21-16), while in Under-19 boys singles, Divum Gupta outplayed Raghav Dogra by (21-19, 21-8).
In women’s doubles final, Preeti and Nithishi emerged winners, while Vipul and Diksha won the mixed doubles final.
Lalit Arora, Daljeet Singh and Balbir Singh Jamwal emerged winners in veterans above 35, 45 and 55 categories respectively, while the pairs of Arun and Suresh, Rahil and Avnish and Sukhdev and Vivek won titles in above 55, 45 and 35 doubles categories respectively.
