30-member Mountaineering team leaves for Delhi

JAMMU, Sept 25: Thirty member team of Mountaineering Association of J&K including four officials left for Delhi to participate in the 21st North Zone Sport Climbing Championship scheduled to be held at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, the apex body for adventure sports in the country.

The Championship will be held from tomorrow to September 28, 2015.

The new look team led by Anil Kumar of RS Pura comprised of 18 boys and 8 girls in six categories of men, women, boys, girls, sub junior boys and sub junior girls.

Four and two climbers have been selected in men and women categories respectively, while the boys and girls categories have three climbers each. The sub junior boys and girls, however include 11 and three climbers respectively.

Shawetica Khajuria, a national judge in sport climbing, is the coach of the team, while Sonam Sidhaerth and Niharika Sharma are the managers of the team. The team is being sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council.

The competitions will be held at 50 feet high international standard artificial climbing wall and boulders in the IMF complex as per international rules. Besides the usual lead and speed competitions, bouldering competitions will also be held in men, women, boys and girls categories. However, sub junior boys and sub junior girls will compete in lead climbing only.

After the North Zone competition, a 26-member team of IMF North Zone Committee will be selected for the participation in National Climbing competition to be held at the same venue from November 28 to November 30, 2015.

Earlier, the team was given an emotional send off by the members of the Mountaineering a Association of J&K including its secretary Ram Khajuria, who exhorted the climbers to perform to their potential and bring back the Champions Trophy, which J&K has lost in 2010, after winning it continuously for 5 years from 2005 to 2009.
