SRINAGAR, May 29: In a remarkable display of endurance and teamwork, 22 Indian Army mountaineers successfully scaled Mt Everest (8,848 metres) as part of the Silver Jubilee Everest Expedition, marking 40 years since the Army’s first successful ascent in 1985.
The 32-member team, led by Lt Col Bhanoo Pathak and comprising Maj Mehak Mehta, Maj Anirudh Yadav, under the expert leadership of expedition commander Lt Col Manoj Joshi.
Army Spokesperson said a medical officer, nursing assistant and supported by 28 Nepali Sherpas, began their journey from India on April 12. They reached Everest Base Camp on April 23 after a tough trek through the Khumbu region.
After weeks of acclimatisation and rotations up to Camp-3, the climbers braved sub-zero temperatures and high winds at Camp-2 (6,400m) before launching their summit attempt on May 26. By 5 am on May 27, all 22 – including 3 officers, 6 JCOs, and 13 NCOs unfurled the Tricolour at the world’s highest peak.
The feat coincided with Kami Rita Sherpa’s record-breaking 31st Everest ascent and included Hav Tundup Namgail of 5 Ladakh Scouts summiting in just four hours. The expedition stands as a proud tribute to the Indian Army’s legacy of adventure and excellence.
