Workshop on Taxonomy of different plant groups organized

JAMMU, Mar 14: Under a unique initiative by the Department of Ecology, Environment &Remote Sensing in collaboration with Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM),one day workshop on Taxonomy of different plant groups was organized in the premises of IIIM, here today.
The objective of the workshop was to revive interest of students, scholars, scientists and forest officers in folk and modern taxonomy. Allied departments also participated to know all kinds of life forms -plants, animals, microbes in forest and Wildlife Ecosystems to appreciate distinctness of species as understood by Science.
Dr P K Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST Jammu was the chief guest who shed light on need of taxonomy for different stake-holders.
Dr Ram Vishwakarma, Director IIM emphasized that focus need to be given not only to alpha taxonomy, but also to beta and gamma taxonomy and forest department need innovative approaches to conserve forests by conserving underground and over-ground microbes and fungal associations which are basic for production of secondary metabolites and new drug discovery.     Dr Sudhir Sopore former VC JNU was the guest of honour.
Prof R N Gohil secretary NASI (J&K chapter ) and O P Sharma, Director Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing also spoke on the occasion.
