JAMMU, Nov 17: Union Sports Minister, Kiran Rijiju felicitated Wushu medallists and coaches of Indian team in New Delhi.
The Indian Wushu team ranked 3rd in the medal tally in Sanda event at World Wushu Championship held recently.
The Minister presented cash award to the players in the form of cheques.
He congratulated the medallists for making India proud and encouraged them to continue their hard work for the forthcoming International Championships, Asian Games and probably 2024 Olympics.
World champion Praveen was presented 20 lakhs, while 14 lakhs was awarded to silver medallists Arjun Awardee Y Sanathoi Devi and Poonam and 8 lakhs to bronze medallist Vikrant Baliyan.
The Minster lauded the efforts of coaches Kuldeep Handoo (National Chief Coach) and Rajesh Kumar Tailor (National Coach) for the excellent performance in the championship. He directed DG SAI for sending coaches to China for 3 months for updating their knowledge with regard to new techniques in China and Iran.
He also congratulated Wushu Association of India headed by Bhupender Singh Bajwa.
Pertinent to mention here that MYAS has already sanctioned 5 National Academies under Khelo India Scheme to Wushu in the country.
He also wished best of luck to the Indian wushu team for the 13th South Asian Games to be led by Handoo.
